What should I remember when shopping for mental health treatment?
- Ask for a complete list of available rates. Treatment can include psychiatrist visits, ongoing therapy sessions, and medication.
- Before starting treatment, talk to your therapist to ensure they can provide itemized bills for the care you receive.
- Understanding the difference between psychiatrists (medical doctors specializing in mental health) and other mental health providers (counselors, psychologists, therapists, etc.) can help you better estimate costs.
- For example, Psychiatrists can prescribe medication to treat mental health problems but may be more costly.
- Understand your mental health coverage for your Sidecar Health plan. You can find these in the member portal.
- Family and couple’s therapy/marriage counseling is not covered under your Sidecar Health plan.
- Consider telehealth, which may be more convenient and cost-effective.
- Some mental health services, like depression screening and alcohol counseling, are considered preventative care and may be covered up to the Benefit Amount, before your deductible has been met, at no cost to you*.
