How does the Sidecar Health Employer Plan work in emergencies?
In case of emergency, we’ve got you covered.
Here’s what you need to know when it comes to emergency care:
- Go to the nearest emergency facility: You can use any emergency facility. Depending on your medical emergency, visiting urgent care can save you time and money.
- Check-in with your Digital Member ID card: When the emergency room asks for insurance information, show your digital member ID card, found in the member portal. It will provide them with the details they need on where to send your claim. Don't pay, the emergency room will send the claim directly to Sidecar Health.
- Receive necessary care
Payment and billing reminders (for the E.R.)
- Your plan complies with the federal No Surprises Act and state Surprise Billing laws.
- Remind the emergency room to send the claim directly to Sidecar Health. By law, they are required to do so and not charge you before providing emergency care. If asked for a deposit, contact Member Care at 855-282-0822.
- Claims can be sent via mail, fax or electronically:

- In an emergency, you are only responsible for covered charges up to your deductible.
-
Your final owed amount will depend on your outstanding deductible. See below for how that works:
- If your deductible has been met -- Sidecar Health works directly with your emergency provider to send payment for covered charges. If you receive any further bills, contact us immediately. Otherwise, no further action is required from you.
-
If you have an outstanding deductible -- expect a bill up to the amount of your remaining deductible to come directly from the emergency provider. To pay the bill from your emergency provider, use your personal payment method, not your Sidecar Health VISA benefit card.
- Need help to finance your outstanding deductible? You may discuss any payment terms or plans with your emergency provider directly. Your provider may also offer payment plans and financing to help stretch out payments over an extended period of time.
- Think your provider made an error in calculating your deductible amount? Contact us immediately, so we can reach out to your provider with an Explanation of Payment to correct your billed deductible amount. You will find a copy of your Explanation of Payment on your expense detail page in the member portal, which you may also present to your provider.
What to do if you receive an emergency care bill from a provider outside of the hospital
Emergency room physicians may bill separately from the hospital. In these instances, your insurance information may not be automatically shared with them, especially if submitted after discharge. If you receive a bill from an emergency physician group outside of your hospital, please contact them directly to provide your insurance information so they can bill Sidecar Health directly. The hospital may not have a record of this bill. And remember, for emergency services you are always protected. You will not be responsible for paying for any emergency charges that exceed your deductible.
The Sidecar Health Employer Plan complies with federal and state surprise billing laws, including the No Surprises Act. In an emergency, you will only be responsible for covered charges up to your deductible/MOOP (Maximum-out-of-Pocket). You will never be responsible for covered emergency charges that exceed your deductible.
